On Tuesday 29th March, Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales sent the following message:
Today, I am publishing the Manifesto for the Future: Our local elections, a series of recommendations to political parties as they develop their political programmes ahead of the 2022 local elections in May.
The voice of young people in the upcoming elections is more important than ever, with 16- and 17-year-olds choosing their local councillors for the first time.
That’s why I collaborated with The Democracy Box, a group of 16-26 year olds based or born in Wales, to develop the 52 recommendations contained in the Manifesto.
Whether it’s the climate and nature emergency or the cost of living crisis, it’s easy to feel small in the face of the big issues of the day. But some of the most effective solutions can often be found on a local level, which is why the upcoming elections present such an important opportunity – particularly in the wake of the pandemic - to build the Wales of the future.
To do this, we must make smart decisions, making those connections between solving the problems of now, and setting us in good stead for the future. All members in our communities have an important role to play, which is why I am delighted that young people have had a prominent voice in developing the recommendations that make up the manifesto.
